Biocruces Bizkaia HRI (BCB) is a Health Research Institute of the Bizkaia Region. BBHRI was established in 2008 and aims to promote, unite, and support the research groups to develop a quality translational research and enhance the effective innovation and collaboration with other organisations; all this in order to provide new tools, and knowledge to contribute to the improvement of health care, population health, wealth creation, and economic development. There are more than 1500 professionals with complementary basic and clinical profiles divided into 60 research groups.

As the leader of the Clinical Work Package, BCB’s role is to lead the validation of the impact of the identified personal and external risk factors and the associated biological responses in 3 clinical use cases: general population risk assessment and screening, precision screening of high-risk populations, and digital diagnostics.

BCB’s main clinical goals are:

  • Identification of high-risk population
  • Follow-up strategy for high-risk population
  • Identification of lung cancer subtypes: (understanding cellular pathways and risk factors)
  • Characterisation of indeterminate pulmonary nodules
  • Lung cancer phenotype of never smokers & reduced smokers population (NSRS)
  • Epidemiological analysis
  • Risk factors models efficiency and usability
