“Lung Cancer can’t wait – Prevent it, Detect it early, Save Lives”

On 27 May 2025, the LUCIA project held a hybrid scientific evening titled “Lung Cancer can’t wait – Prevent it, Detect it early, Save Lives” in Bilbao, Spain.

Aligning with the objectives of the Cancer Mission to ensure that early detection initiatives lead to meaningful health improvements, the event featured participation from leading experts, physicians, scientists, stakeholders, policymakers, and patient associations, emphasizing the importance of a multidisciplinary and patient-centred approach in research. We were proud to welcome:

  • Prof. Tit Albreht, Head of the Centre for Health Care at Slovenia’s National Institute of Public Health and President of the European Public Health Association.
  • Dr. Carlijn van der Aalst, Associate Professor in Public Health at Erasmus MC – University Medical Center Rotterdam.
  • David Ritchie, Project Officer at the Environment and Lifestyle Epidemiology (ENV) branch at the International Agency for Research Cancer (IARC/WHO).
  • Veronica Malda, Manager of the Spanish Association Against Cancer in Bizkaia.
  • Stephanie Oyonarte, Member of the board of the Spanish Association of People Affected by Lung Cancer.

The participation of patient associations and the community is of vital importance in these events, above all, to know their real needs and demands and in this way be able to generate empowerment, increase their health literacy, and above all improve their healthy habits, their quality of life and self-management of the disease. We thank them very much for their presence.

This conference is part of the activities of the “Prevention and Early Detection (Screening)” and “Understanding (Risk factors & Determinants)” clusters under the EU cancer mission.  It serves as a key dissemination event for the LUCIA project, dedicated to advancing knowledge and improving strategies for lung cancer screening and early detection.
